4 Signs of Termite Infestation

Termites can go undetected within a home for a long time as they destroy walls and the foundation. Termites will feed on any available wood within the home, including furniture or baseboards. In the event your neighbors have termites, it is not unlikely for the termites to be in or headed to your home.

Though termites are very sneaky, there are some distinct clues they give to make their presence known. It is important to remove termite infestations as quickly as possible to remove the threat of high repair costs. These signs are commonly found when termites are present.

Frass or Droppings

One of the tell-tale signs of any pest is the leftover droppings they leave and termites are no different. This clue is always among the first looked for during termite inspections. Termites will use their frass to help build their tunnels

Lost Wings

Flying termites will often shed their wings after finding a mate before establishing a new colony within the home. Often these wings can be found in areas such as window sills. Often flying termites will swarm in a mating ritual after periods of rain during the year.

Weak Wood

Because termites burrow through wood and consume it, walls will often have a paper-like appearance or sound hollow when tapped. When the affected wood is tapped, it will often have a distinct hollow sound that can indicate termite infestation. In some cases, the wood will be so weak it can be easily pressed in.

Clicking Noises

Termites are very noisy eaters and can often be heard consuming wood within a wall. This is often described as a clicking sound as the wood is being consumed. Termites can also detect even minor vibrations and soldier termites will often bang their heads on the wall to signal danger to the colony.
