Cockroaches Can Contaminate Food Sources

Cockroaches found in domestic areas have been found to carry nearly 32 different bacteria strands. Furthermore, cockroaches can spread 6 different parasitic worms and 7 other unique pathogens. When a cockroach comes in contact with a food source, contamination has already happened.

Transmission of diseases by cockroaches via food contamination usually occurs through two methods. The first method, digestion, happens when contaminated food or water is ingested. Cross contamination on happens when contaminated foods are touched and then transmitted to the eyes or mouth.

Common symptoms of disease transmission include difficulty breathing, fever, nausea and diarrhea. Though the diseases cockroaches transmit are not exclusively transmitted by them they can be very detrimental. Diseases that cockroaches are capable of spreading include:

Salmonella

Much like rodents, cockroaches are capable of spreading salmonella. It is estimated that 1.2 million cases of salmonella are contracted each year in the United States according to the CDC. Salmonella can often cause gastroenteritis and typhoid fever and should be treated as soon as possible.

E. Coli

Escherichia Coli, or E. Coli, is commonly carried in the lower intestine of warm-blood organisms. These bacteria cause a strong case of food poisoning within the affected individual. In minor cases, E. Coli is treated with antibiotics and fluid replacement and lasts around 10 days.
