If you have spent a summer in Oklahoma, you likely have run into your fair share of spiders. Among the spiders that are found in this region, two are always considered the last species you would want to see. Now that the weather has gotten consistently warmer, these potentially dangerous spiders may be emerging in and around your home.
Black Widow Spider
The black widow spider is characterized by its glossy abdomen with a distinct red hourglass shape. However, only females will carry this distinctive marking while the males will often take on red dots along the abdomen. If bitten by a black widow spider, the wound will often go unnoticed until symptoms begin to appear.
Fortunately, the black widow spider bite hasn’t been considered lethal in quite a long time. In recent years, the mortality rate associated with this spider species has fallen well below 1% because the spider will often only inject a small amount of poison with a bite if any. However, the female black widow spider is still considered the most venomous spider in North America.
Brown Recluse Spider
The brown recluse spider is characterized by its oval-shaped abdomen and the darkened “violin shape” found on the carapace behind their eyes. Though this is a common characteristic found with brown recluse spiders, it shouldn’t be considered the only criterion for determining species. This species also has very long legs, which may be noticed first.
The venom of a brown recluse spider is necrotic, meaning it has the potential to kill the skin. A simple Google search for their bite can provide some of the most horrifying images you’ve ever seen but in most cases, the venom can be treated before any serious damage occurs. Though tissue damage is a possibility, fatalities associated with the venom of this species have not been verified.
