Do Termites Hibernate During the Colder Months?

While many insects will begin to hibernate in the upcoming months to wait out the cold, this may not be true about one of the most destructive pests you can find inside of your home or business. Unfortunately, termites are efficient workers year-round and will rarely take a break from finding food for the rest of the colony and queen. But what exactly do termites do during the fall and will termites still swarm?

What do Termites do in the Fall and Winter?

Termites will remain active throughout both the fall and winter regardless of what species they may be. In Oklahoma, Subterranean termites will remain a real threat because they are still able to create warmer routes between the soil and your home. For this reason, it is not uncommon for them to continue chipping away at your home even when the air is too frigid for you.

Termite swarming requires a moist environment after a period of rain. For this reason, it is unlikely you will see termite swarmers until the spring or summer months arrive. However, this doesn’t mean that swarmers aren’t preparing for flight throughout the fall and winter months. It is important to remember that just because some pests are becoming less visible, it doesn’t mean that you can stop protecting against them.

If you expect that termites have made their way into your home or business, it is important to act as quickly as possible to ensure the damage they cause is minimized.
