Natural Scorpion Deterrents

Scorpions aren’t high on the list of pests welcome within a home. These predatory arachnids are easily identified by their eight legs and unmistakable stinger. Scorpion stings are harmless to humans in most cases, however, the pain associated with their sting can be incredible. Scorpions can be found in nearly any ecosystem and serve a variety of purposes, however, deterring scorpions from entering your home can be done with simple preventative tips.

Fill Holes and Cracks

Scorpions typically gain access into homes through cracks and holes around pipe fittings. During a heavy drought, a scorpion will enter a home to find water sources. Sealing pipe fittings, windows, vents and wall imperfections will help prevent scorpions from entering your home. Since scorpions are capable of climbing, sealing higher entrances like vents and ceiling fixtures is also necessary.

Plant Repellents

Scorpions are known the view lavender and citrus as repellents. By playing lavender around your home, these pests will be less likely to come near. Planted lavender seems to work more effectively, however, essential oils can be used as well. Since scorpions can enter through plumbing routes, cleaning the bathroom and other areas of the house with citrus based cleaners can help deter them.

Remove Potential Residences

Scorpions are most likely to reside within rocks, under firewood and in compost heaps. If these items need to be in your landscape, moving them further from the house will help deter scorpions. If these items are not necessary removing them can keep your yard less pest-friendly. It is also important to keep the lawn tidy through mowing and pruning bushes and overhead branches.
