Overwintering Pests Present Infestation Dangers

During this time of year, many insects and pests will begin overwintering. This process occurs when pests enter homes to wait out the winter for survival purposes. In most cases, these pests seek the shelter and warmth of a home and the food sources it provides.

Often these pests will congregate in large numbers on the south and west sides of a home before making their way into the structure. Often they will overwinter within spaces within the home like attics or within the walls and emerge on warmer days or during the spring. There are many overwintering pests that are commonly seen.

Lady Bugs

Within a garden setting, lady bugs are generally welcome because they remove the threat of aphids. However, one species, Asian Lady Beetles, are generally more aggressive and can be found in greater numbers. In recent times, lady bugs have been found in groups within the mouths of dogs causing sickness and excessive drooling.

Boxelder Bugs

Generally found within boxelder trees, and occasionally other plants, the boxelder bug is easily identified by its black body covered in red stripes. Though they do not cause structural damage, these pests can leave stains throughout the home. While overwintering, these pests will not feed or reproduce.

Cluster Flies

This large, sluggish fly will hibernate within the walls of a home during the winter months before emerging in the spring. Problems with this pest can be partially prevented, however, after the fall removal can be near impossible. Once cluster flies have begun their hibernation, they will likely remain in the walls for the duration of winter.
