Rodent Infestation Can Increase Health Risks

It’s no secret that mice are among the most unwelcome pests within homes and commercial settings. Though rats and mice have become popularized by films such as Ratatouille and Stuart Little, in reality, they have the ability to pass diseases to individuals within the home. As mice search your home for food, they are leaving droppings or urine at unexpected places. Unknown contact with these can cause an array of health problems.

Hantavirus

Infection of the hantavirus from infected rodent droppings or urine can progress to Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, which can be fatal to humans. The rodent is immune to the hantavirus as a host and will not exhibit symptoms.

Leptospirosis

When left untreated, Leptospirosis can lead to kidney and liver damage. In the most extreme cases, death has been reported. Leptospirosis is caused by direct contact with urine from infected animals. Interestingly only mammals are able to transmit the disease to other mammals.

Salmonella

The Center for Disease Control has stated that mice and other rodents are susceptible to carrying the salmonella bacteria within their digestive tracts. By coming into contact with their droppings you are at risk of contracting the bacteria. Severe cases may require IV fluids, but most people recover with just fluids over a short time.

Rat Bite Fever

Streptobacillus moniliformis is the cause of rat-bite fever. The bacteria are found within the mouth, primarily on the teeth and gums, and are passed to humans upon being bitten by the rodent. In the United States, Haverhill fever is the most common occurrence.
