Many individuals believe the misconception that scorpions will die off during the winter. Scorpions are very resilient and can survive during cold temperatures but choose to hibernate instead. For this reason, scorpions will often enter the home during the winter for the warmth it provides.
Bark scorpions are commonly found in Oklahoma and are often solitary creatures. However, during the winter some bark scorpion species can be found hibernating in groups of up to 30 individual scorpions. Though they can survive the cold, they don’t particularly like it, making hibernation their best option.
In the fall months, it is possible that scorpions have ventured into your home. As the weather begins to cool scorpions will begin searching for dark, warm crevices to hibernate. Scorpions can enter an opening as small as 1/16″, making baseboards, furniture gaps and wall voids especially susceptible.
Often homeowners will begin seeing scorpions in their home when the weather starts to warm up. This commonly creates the misconception that scorpion season is beginning. However, it is likely that the scorpions have taken residence in your home throughout the entire winter and are now reemerging.
The easiest way to prevent scorpion hibernation in your home during the winter is to ensure there are no viable entryways they can utilize. Often these entry points come in the form of cracks in the door, utility points and piping. Sealing these cracks and replacing window screens can greatly deter scorpions.
Though scorpions may be sleeping in your walls now, it is unlikely you will know until the cold weather moves out of Oklahoma. Once warmer weather appears and scorpions begin emerging, you can be sure we will be there to assist you. We can make your home comfortable again by removing any pests that may appear.
