Cockroaches are one of the most despised pests in the entire world. While there are many myths surrounding them, including that they only inhabit dirty homes, no home is safe from a cockroach invasion as long as food and water are available. If you are concerned that your home has a lingering pest problem, here are some signs you may need roach control.
Visible Cockroaches
Cockroaches are a nocturnal insect, so seeing a live cockroach during the day can be a troubling sign for homeowners or business owners. Often, this can signify that a large cockroach infestation is present and cockroaches have been forced out of the nest due to overpopulation. On the other hand, this can also mean that they are experiencing famine and new food sources have to be located.
Cockroach Feces
During a cockroach infestation, homeowners or business owners may find cockroach feces. These droppings are often similar in appearance to spilled ground black pepper or coffee grounds. In many cases, the severity of the infestation and a general idea of how long the infestation has gone on can be determined by the number of droppings alone.
Musty Odors
As a cockroach infestation progresses, a strong musty odor may begin to intensify in the affected areas of a home or business. While it can signify a large group of roaches is present, even a single German cockroach can emit this smell. As dead cockroaches begin to decompose, oleic acid is produced which further compounds the smell.
Egg Casings
Cockroach eggs, known as ootheca, are another sign that roach control is needed In your home or business. These egg casings are oval-shaped and will often be hidden in areas that don’t receive much traffic from humans. If you are attempting to search for the presence of cockroaches, try looking behind appliances for egg casings primarily in areas that provide water or food.
