Termite Activity in Winter

With the Artic chill settling across Oklahoma and chances of snow finally being announced, some homeowners may think their termite troubles are done for the season. In reality, termites are active throughout the entire year, even in winter. When termites are nested in a heated building or the adjacent soil to heated basements, little to no change can be observed in their daily habits during the winter.

Throughout the year, termite queens are steadily laying eggs at a consistent rate. There are few exceptions to this process that can be observed readily. In warmer winter climates, egg production will continue as is the season hasn’t changed, however, in areas with lower temperatures, egg production may be halted until the spring.

Termite detection in a home is not impossible during the winter, mainly because these pests are well insulated by a home from harsh weather conditions. This means that the termites already within the walls will continue to feed on the wood throughout the winter, making damage readily visible. In Oklahoma winter seasons are typically not too harsh, allowing for sustained life of insects such as termites.

Even though termites remain active throughout the winter, witnessing swarming termites is highly unlikely in Oklahoma. However, in tropical areas, such as Florida, homes may reach temperatures more than 70 degrees. This unseasonal temperature can lead to visible swarming termites during the season.
