Tips to prevent mice from invading your home

Mice in the home can happen at times, and it’s never a pleasant encounter. When most people find out they have mice in their home generally a few things cross their minds… how did they get in, what caused them to come in, and how I can prevent more from coming inside. Here are some answers to all of these questions to help you if you find yourself in this situation.

There are many ways that mice can get into your home, and there are some simple things that you can do to prevent them from coming in. One way they can get in is in the foundation. If a mouse finds a gap or a hole in the foundation they can get in that way. They can also get in through any entrance you may have. All windows and doors should always be closed all the way without having any gaps; this would be easy access for a mouse to enter your home. Mice can also get into your home through your roof. If there are any gaps or breaks in your chimney; or if you have any shingles that are loose, mice can get in that way. They can also get in through your garage; if there are any parts that aren’t closed tightly and have any wiggle room; mice will be able to get in for sure.

There are some things that you may have in your home that can attract mice in. If you have a lot of food or water in your home, it can be seen as a haven for mice. They don’t have to search too hard to get what they need to survive. A lot of debris and clutter can be an attraction for mice as well… they like it when there are crumbs around and dirty dishes. They can feed off of the food they find this way. If you have a garden, fruit trees or a birdfeeder outside your

home, it can attract mice too. They often come in for shelter… especially when it’s colder outside. If they feel the warmth coming from the inside through any openings you may have they will make their way in. Hot water heaters are a good place for mice to be because it is a reliable place for the mice to stay warm. If you have woodpiles by your home, mice may gather there as well; once near the home, they will try to find a way in.

If you should find a mouse in your home there are some key things that you need to do. You should make sure you store all of your food they would have access to in plastic storage containers. You should also make sure you keep a nice and tidy house. You can also place cotton balls that have peppermint oil on them in the areas that mice usually get in… the scent of the peppermint oil is too much for the mice. You can also get a trap that is appropriate so you can do a catch and release.

These few things can help you make sure that mice stay away from your home. If you try these out, you should always have a mice free home.
