With the unseasonably warm weather that Oklahoma has been seeing lately, it’s no wonder we’re still getting a lot of calls to spray for spiders. The more spiders spotted means that more people are dealing with spider bites. Thankfully most spiders don’t bite humans and the ones that do only do so if they’re provoked. Most spider bites don’t even fully penetrate human skin. When spiders actually do bite, the vast majority of those bites only cause a mild reaction in people, such as minor swelling, inflammation, or itching.
However, black widow and brown recluse spider bites can cause serious reactions and need immediate care. Unfortunately, both of these venomous spiders are commonly found in Oklahoma and in homes. To protect your family and yourself, keep spiders out of your home, and know the spider bite signs and symptoms that you need to watch out for:
Brown recluse spider bite:
- red blister in the center with surrounding bluish discoloration around the bite
- swelling or redness around the bite
- development of pain around the bite within 2 to 8 hours
- joint stiffness or pain
- nausea, vomiting
- body rash
- fever and chills
- fatigue
Black widow spider bite:
- rigid, painful muscles within 8 hours
- no sign of the bite on the skin
- abdominal (belly) pain and cramping
- nausea and vomiting
- breathing trouble
Allergic reaction to any spider bite:
- swelling of the face or mouth
- difficulty swallowing or speaking
- chest tightness, wheezing, or difficulty breathing
Seek medical care right away if you notice any of these signs or symptoms of spider bites. The quicker that treatment can be administered the better.
