When Is Termite Control Needed?

Termites are responsible for billions of dollars annually, making them a formidable pest for many homeowners or business owners unfortunate enough to find them. If you are like most, your home or business is likely one of the biggest investments you own and the idea of termites slowly eating through it doesn’t sound appealing. In fact, it can be downright terrifying knowing everything you have worked so hard for could be at risk.

If you are worried about your home or business at this point you may be wondering “When is termite control needed?”. Though there is no wrong answer to that question, preventative termite control is obviously going to be more beneficial than letting a colony establish itself and dealing with it later. However, a few key signs can help determine if your home or business needs termite control services.

  • Mud Tubes – Subterranean termites will utilize mud tubes as a shelter to travel to food sources from their underground colonies. These pencil-sized tubes can be broken to search for the presence of small white termites that may be using the route. If empty, that doesn’t mean termites aren’t there, they just may have abandoned this tube for an alternate one.

  • Wood Damage – In most cases, termite damaged wood will be hollowed out along the grain, unlike damage typically seen with moisture. As termites feed on a wall or wood source, the paint may chip and the wood may begin to sag. These signs generally mean that the termite infestation is established and termite control shouldn’t be held off any longer.

Termites are incredibly sneaky pests and can spend years inside of your walls with no indication that your home or business is experiencing an infestation. In many cases, termite damage can go undetected until it’s too late because the outer surface of the material they are feeding on remains undisturbed. For the best results possible, preventative termite control should be in place to avoid costly repairs in the future.
